Consulting

A great example of our consulting services is our work with Hamilton County (Ohio) Job & Family Services (JFS). Under a long-term agreement we are providing innovative leadership to develop and manage the Fatherhood Collaborative of Hamilton County (FCHC). Lucian Families redesigned and reestablished the once dormant collaborative in 2019. We’ve built a vibrant, effective community-wide approach to supporting fathers and fatherhood that’s best in class.

The FCHC aims to stimulate interest and action on the needs and aspirations of fathers, thereby facilitating positive change in systems, organizations and programs around how fathers are included, engaged and served. Some of the strategies we implemented are:

  • Conceptualized and launched local fatherhood research, gaining the support of the University of Cincinnati’s Center for Clinical & Translational Science & Training

  • Launched an annual fathers award banquet, “The Esteemed Seven: A Celebration of Fatherhood” in partnership with The lota Sigma Sigma Alumnae Chapter, Sigma Gamma Roh Sorority Inc.

  • Connected the FCHC with OhioGuidestone to participate in their groundbreaking paternal depression study

  • Built a diverse collaborative by including the education, health care, business, arts, domestic violence and breastfeeding/infant mortality sectors

On My Shoulders Fatherhood Curriculum

OMS+Activity+Journal+PRODUCT+PIC.jpg

On My Shoulders (OMS) is a research-based curriculum designed for fathers in the tradition and style of PREP (The Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program). OMS was created in collaboration with Calvin Williams, who served as the fatherhood subject matter expert on the curriculum development team. PREP curricula are founded on best practices, are empirically informed, empirically tested in outcome studies, and are regularly refined based on new scientific knowledge in the field of research on relationships. OMS uses many concepts and strategies in PREP along with new content focused on the issues and dynamics affecting fathers, particularly those who are in low income communities who may or may not be involved in the lives of their children, or the lives of children of a current partner.

On My Shoulders Training

Calvin Williams is a co-author of and a Master Trainer for the OMS curriculum. OMS was designed to be flexible, and can be used effectively in a wide range of programs. Coparent Coaching Services

Lucian Families uses the “Let’s Just Parent” Coparent Coaches Toolkit. More information about “Let’s Just Parent” is on the way. The “Let’s Just Parent” Coparent Coaches Toolkit will be available to the public soon!

Lucian Families uses the “Let’s Just Parent” Coparenting Coaching Toolkit to deliver coparent coaching services to mothers and fathers whose couple relationship has ended. We have over 7 years and hundreds of hours of coparent coaching sessions under our belt. “Let’s Just Parent” contains exercises, worksheets and strategies designed to help parents get through difficult conversations, decisions and emotions, to communicate better and to be problem solvers.

The stakes couldn’t be higher for the children. High-conflict coparenting relationships put children at risk for: aggression; slowed language development; hyperactivity; poor social skills; slowed cognitive development; difficulty managing emotions; and losing time or access to one or both parents.

An evaluation of “Let’s Just Parent” concluded that “…all of the participant fathers affirmed the value in the coparenting services, liked the coparenting coach and expressed satisfaction with the individualized nature of the services” (Fatherhood Research & Practice Network “Summary Report: Evaluating Mother and Nonresidential Father Engagement in Coparenting Services in a Fatherhood Program”, November 2018).

Contact Lucian Families to begin providing coparenting coaching services to parents in your school, clinic, hospital, father or mother-serving program or in other family-serving organizations.
